Common myths about a career in Business Analytics: Busted!

Kunal Jain 27 Aug, 2021 • 3 min read

Some time back, I wrote an article on “How to start a career in Business Analytics?“. The article was well received by people who want to enter Business Analytics. It is still one of the most popular articles on Analytics Vidhya. In response to this article, I received a lot of queries about career in Analytics. While some of them were good queries, some of them were recurring myths.

Hence, I decided to do a follow up article. Not only so, in order to debunk these myths entirely, I decided to publish the articles in all relevant forums.

common myths in analytics career

Here are the myths I received through queries / comments / emails and my take on them:

  • You need to be an engineer to start a career in Business Analytics: The truth is that you don’t. All you need is ability to think structurally and comfort with number crunching. As long as you can put structure to unstructured problems and perform back of the envelope calculations, you are as good as any analyst out there.

Having said that, companies prefer people from quantitative background as they are expected to be better with numbers. By quantitative background, I mean people from any of these disciplines: Engineering, Economics, Maths, Statistics, Physics or MBAs with graduation in these fields.

  • Analytics is about working with large datasets / Companies work with big data day in and day out: This rosy picture is far from reality in most of the Organizations. Experts estimate penetration of big data to be in low single digit percentage among Organizations. Most of the time analytics team work on specific problems, which may or may not involve large datasets. The requirement of the role is to be able to put structure across unstructured problems and be able to use numbers to understand business and the changes required in strategy.
  • You need to be a programmer: I was a good C++ programmer when I started my career in Analytics. Sadly, none of those skills have been utilized in last 7 years and might not be utilized in future. You only need to learn programming for the tool you use for your analysis (e.g. SAS, R, SQL etc.), but you don’t need to be a good programmer before hand to learn these. Also, most of these tools have a Graphical User Interface (GUI), which you can start using with out knowing programming.
  • Learning Analytics is all about learning a tool (SAS / SPSS / other tool): A tool is just a tool to perform Analysis. It can not perform analysis on its own. You need to understand the fundamentals required for performing analysis like:
    • What are the things you need to keep in mind while performing Regression?
    • What can you infer from the coefficients and outcome of t-tests?
    • How do you prove or dis-prove a business hypothesis?

Once you understand these, applying them through any tool can help you start your journey of Analytics.

  • Its difficult to find a job – In fact it is the other way around. Analytics industry is struggling with attrition and shortage of talent. According to the McKinsey Global Institute (In a May 2011 report): “By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.” If you have the right skills, you will be highly sought after (at least in the current market conditions).

Are there any other myths that you are aware of? In case you are, or are unsure whether it is a myth or a fact, please add it below.

Hi Kunal, First thanks for making an effort to provide insights into analytics field. I came across your blog while i was searching for some information around analytics. Actually i am a software programmer with 6 yrs of experience in mainframe technology ,we also use SAS (mainframe compatible) in our org. Of late i have been planning to pursue analytics course(my interest mostly owing to the fact that its going to be a sort after job in coming years PLUS i think there is limited growth in my current field both in terms of remuneration and postion PLUS i think i have good hand in playing with data and logical thinking PLUS i am keen to learn something New apart from what i am currently doing). I donot have any real experience in the field of analytics. Though i have almost made my mind of getting in to some kind of course , but would still like you to provide your view if i am thinking in the right direction and it would be useful to me. I think i should better enrol myself in a program where there is Classroom training as well along with the online training. I have shortlisted following options for analytics course. 1)PG program by Great Lakes(gurgaon) in business analytcs. Pros Since i am working in gurgaon , so it would be easier for me to attend the classes.(they have 5 whole day classes every alternate month (i.e almost 20 days in 11 months), rest of the classes will be online. Fee- 3 lacs I know its Not cheap , but cheaper than my second option (IIM-L which is charging 4.8 lacs for this course) Cons Its their first batch so do Not know how that would be. With their description of modules it seems that they are going to cover more functionl areasi.e their focus would moe be on providing horisontal knowledge covering many domain rather than Vertical knowledge. Tools Covered - SAS , R ,Tableu. 2)- IIM-Lucknow Pros- Good brand name This is Not the first batch(unlike Great lakes) so may be the course is more refined and matured than GL. 80% of classes would be taken by SAS institute itself. Cons- Higher fees - 4.8 lacs Distant location than my work place. Obviously i can share with you the course/curriculum details of Gl may be that would help you make a comparison b/e couse by IIM-l and GL. Please advise if its worth to spent this amounts of this course , i am assuming that regular course will have its own advantages..but may be i am wrong... or can i also look for options (i.e some coaching institute which provide similar training). Since i have to make a descion by 9th november (last date to deposit fees in GL), Could you please guide me through . Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi Kunal, I appreciate your initiative. But I am a bit not justified with the last myth's explanation. I am a PGDM in Decision Sciences (Analytics and IT), I am well verged with the predictive modelling techniques like Regression (Linear, Logistic, Multi Linear), Clustering, Forecasting (time-series), Factor, Neural Network, SVM, SOM, Bayeian Networks and MCMC. Also I am proficient with most of the statistical tools used in indusrty like R, SAS, SPSS, Bayesia Lab, AMOS, Minitab and others. But still I find it hard to get a job of my worth as I am a fresher There are jobs in the market, I agree but Not for freshers, Then how to start...?

Hi, I have a BA degree in statistics and I'm currently pursuing an MA degree in finance(final year). My masters course contains a lot of quantitative methods which are also used in analytics and I am picking up the rest on my own. My problem is that there is no placement cell in my college. I am planning to give the amcat and elitmus employability tests. Is there any scope for jobs in analytics for freshers of my qualifications through these tests? Are there any other ways by which I can approach companies for an interview? Thank You for the posts. They are very helpful.

Hi Kuntal, Thanks for all these insightful information. I am equity analyst (finance background) and have 10+ years experience. I dont have any background in IT. I have background in chemical technology (BE) and MBA finance. After all these years and entirely different background; how easy/difficult is to pursue fresh career in these areas - Analytics and Big data. Will there be opportunities for such diverse background on immediate and Long term basis. Also, I am decently paid and well settled career but i find these areas interesting. Should these areas offer so better opportunities that; i should think about changing career in late 30s. If i want to; How should i proceed - full time/part time. Which universities/courses should i look for? is there any international universities offer online courses? I heard about NIIT courses; how different they are compared to fulltime from IIM/IIT/ISB courses? Appreciate your suggestion on this. Regards, Raj

Hii Kunal, Firstly I'd like to thank u for sharing the insights, which I found really helpful. Now like everyone else I have a career issue to discuss. I am an Engg Grad in Marine Engineering from BITS, and have been sailing on tankers for almost 5 years now. But now due to health issues I had to quit sailing and am now looking to switch over analytics ...and due to my love of Maths...I am currently pursuing Actuarial Sciences(am a student member of IAI). Through my core reading I have come across and understood most of financial and stastical tools imployed in analytics, but due to my past background, I have been unable to find a break through in this field. I would like to know whether getting SAS certification (alone or together with actuarial exams) will aid my cause. I totally understand that I would have to start afresh in analytics , and would like to know your recommendations regarding the path to employ. Best Regards, ATUL

Hi Kunal Really a great article you wrote there. I have some query regarding the BA course for which I need your insight. I did my graduation from Australia in BBA-Marketing. I did my PGDM (Post Graduation Diploma in Management) from IMT Ghaziabad again in Marketing. My first job was with Walmart India in Merchandising and Buying with lots of data crunching as I have to look after 6000 items on daily basis. Currently I am working with CII(Confederation of Indian Industry) in delhi in the role of marketing executive. I have 2 years of experience in marketing, merchandising etc. Now I want to pursue my career as Business Analysts. Where can i pursue the following as I dont want to spend large amount of money on it. Plus I am based in Delhi, so which is the best institute in delhi to pursue the same or which is the best institute for distance learning? Thanks Ishan

Hi Kunal, I am an MBA specialized in marketing and finance from a tier2/3 B School. I have work experience for about 3 years in analytics(1 year in telecom and 2 in market research and now I am a senior analyst). My problem is I am not an extremely number savy person even though I like and understand numbers I tend to make lots of mistakes while performing analysis. I am good in understanding the business problem and in suggesting which analysis or statistic technology should be performed. But I am not that great in actually performing this analysis. What kind of roles do suggest me to focus on. I really know that analytics is a very fast growing industry, but I have realized that roles like data scientist are not my cup of tea. It will be of great help if you can suggest me about the career direction which I should take as I am a bit confused now

Hi Kunal, Thank you for the great insight into Analytics. My Background: I am an IT professional with 4 years of experience. I have great passion for maths and stats although I have not been in touch for quite a long time. I was thinking of trying to get into the PGDBA (PG in Business Analytics) from IIMC+ISI Kolkata+IIT K, a newly introduced 2 years course, which seems to have good potential. But I feel that this would make my experience of no use. Instead i I do MBA, my experience would back me and would be of great use. So, finally my confusion is: 1. What do you feel abou this course jointly offered by IIMC+ISI Kolkata+IIT K ? 2. Should I go for this course or an MBA? Which would be better for me (Considering I would be happy to do either of the 2)? Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Presently I am looking forward to cracking PGDBA(joint program by IIM Cal, IIT K and ISI Cal) which has its entrance test in mid February.
