Some time back, I wrote an article on “How to start a career in Business Analytics?“. The article was well received by people who want to enter Business Analytics. It is still one of the most popular articles on Analytics Vidhya. In response to this article, I received a lot of queries about career in Analytics. While some of them were good queries, some of them were recurring myths.
Hence, I decided to do a follow up article. Not only so, in order to debunk these myths entirely, I decided to publish the articles in all relevant forums.
Here are the myths I received through queries / comments / emails and my take on them:
-
You need to be an engineer to start a career in Business Analytics: The truth is that you don’t. All you need is ability to think structurally and comfort with number crunching. As long as you can put structure to unstructured problems and perform back of the envelope calculations, you are as good as any analyst out there.
Having said that, companies prefer people from quantitative background as they are expected to be better with numbers. By quantitative background, I mean people from any of these disciplines: Engineering, Economics, Maths, Statistics, Physics or MBAs with graduation in these fields.
- Analytics is about working with large datasets / Companies work with big data day in and day out: This rosy picture is far from reality in most of the Organizations. Experts estimate penetration of big data to be in low single digit percentage among Organizations. Most of the time analytics team work on specific problems, which may or may not involve large datasets. The requirement of the role is to be able to put structure across unstructured problems and be able to use numbers to understand business and the changes required in strategy.
- You need to be a programmer: I was a good C++ programmer when I started my career in Analytics. Sadly, none of those skills have been utilized in last 7 years and might not be utilized in future. You only need to learn programming for the tool you use for your analysis (e.g. SAS, R, SQL etc.), but you don’t need to be a good programmer before hand to learn these. Also, most of these tools have a Graphical User Interface (GUI), which you can start using with out knowing programming.
- Learning Analytics is all about learning a tool (SAS / SPSS / other tool): A tool is just a tool to perform Analysis. It can not perform analysis on its own. You need to understand the fundamentals required for performing analysis like:
- What are the things you need to keep in mind while performing Regression?
- What can you infer from the coefficients and outcome of t-tests?
- How do you prove or dis-prove a business hypothesis?
Once you understand these, applying them through any tool can help you start your journey of Analytics.
- Its difficult to find a job – In fact it is the other way around. Analytics industry is struggling with attrition and shortage of talent. According to the McKinsey Global Institute (In a May 2011 report): “By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.” If you have the right skills, you will be highly sought after (at least in the current market conditions).
Are there any other myths that you are aware of? In case you are, or are unsure whether it is a myth or a fact, please add it below.

Kunal is a post graduate from IIT Bombay in Aerospace Engineering. He has spent more than 10 years in field of Data Science. His work experience ranges from mature markets like UK to a developing market like India. During this period he has lead teams of various sizes and has worked on various tools like SAS, SPSS, Qlikview, R, Python and Matlab.
Useful article Kunal. Needed to know your views on the depth of statistics knowledge a person should know to make good sense of BA ( you may mention bare minimum and desirable ) .....regs/santosh
Santosh, I would say that at the very least, you need to understand all the basic terms (mean, median, standard deviation, confidence interval, normal distribution, binalmial distribution) and hypothesis testing (Null hypothesis, alternate hypothesis, t-test etc.). You may need to understand lift curve and a few co-efficients, if you want to make sense of predictive modeling. Hope this helps. Thanks, Kunal
Kunal, Do I need a background of finance and current affairs to become a analyst , if not where are those required? Thanks, Mruthyunjay
Mruthyunjaya, Background in Finance is not a critical need, but people from Finance background can become analysts due to quant exposure. Current affairs has no relation with becoming an analyst. Hope this answers your question. Thanks, Kunal
Kunal how is the job scenario for analytics in European countries such as Ireland?? ,/Vikesh
Vikesh, Overall, the European markets are still recovering from recession and there have been some signs of recovery. The demand for Analytics is good, but I am not sure it is good enough to plan a move to these countries. If you have some opportunity in hand, then it is a different matter. You can refer to efinancialcareers.com for job postings in Financial space in UK. If there is some other reason for the query, let me know. I'll help in whatever manner I can. Thanks, Kunal
Hi Kunal, First thanks for making an effort to provide insights into analytics field. I came across your blog while i was searching for some information around analytics. Actually i am a software programmer with 6 yrs of experience in mainframe technology ,we also use SAS (mainframe compatible) in our org. Of late i have been planning to pursue analytics course(my interest mostly owing to the fact that its going to be a sort after job in coming years PLUS i think there is limited growth in my current field both in terms of remuneration and postion PLUS i think i have good hand in playing with data and logical thinking PLUS i am keen to learn something New apart from what i am currently doing). I donot have any real experience in the field of analytics. Though i have almost made my mind of getting in to some kind of course , but would still like you to provide your view if i am thinking in the right direction and it would be useful to me. I think i should better enrol myself in a program where there is Classroom training as well along with the online training. I have shortlisted following options for analytics course. 1)PG program by Great Lakes(gurgaon) in business analytcs. Pros Since i am working in gurgaon , so it would be easier for me to attend the classes.(they have 5 whole day classes every alternate month (i.e almost 20 days in 11 months), rest of the classes will be online. Fee- 3 lacs I know its Not cheap , but cheaper than my second option (IIM-L which is charging 4.8 lacs for this course) Cons Its their first batch so do Not know how that would be. With their description of modules it seems that they are going to cover more functionl areasi.e their focus would moe be on providing horisontal knowledge covering many domain rather than Vertical knowledge. Tools Covered - SAS , R ,Tableu. 2)- IIM-Lucknow Pros- Good brand name This is Not the first batch(unlike Great lakes) so may be the course is more refined and matured than GL. 80% of classes would be taken by SAS institute itself. Cons- Higher fees - 4.8 lacs Distant location than my work place. Obviously i can share with you the course/curriculum details of Gl may be that would help you make a comparison b/e couse by IIM-l and GL. Please advise if its worth to spent this amounts of this course , i am assuming that regular course will have its own advantages..but may be i am wrong... or can i also look for options (i.e some coaching institute which provide similar training). Since i have to make a descion by 9th november (last date to deposit fees in GL), Could you please guide me through . Thanks a lot in advance.
Dheeraj, You are right in thinking that you should prefer classes + online training. Between the 2 options you have mentioned, I would have preferred IIM-L due to brand and association with SAS. I would consider the course from ISB to be better than the 2 and they have been running the course for 2 - 3 batches now. There admissions are also open, see if that fits you better. Thanks, Kunal
Dear Kunal, Interesting and insightful reads. Will you please suggest some reasonably priced /free online /part-time programmes on analytics. Thank you Salil
Salil, You can read following articles to start with: 1. Analytics training recommendations 2. Advanced analytics certifications Also, stay tuned with us, we will put up a page which will provide you exactly what you are looking for! Kunal
Hi Kunal, I appreciate your initiative. But I am a bit not justified with the last myth's explanation. I am a PGDM in Decision Sciences (Analytics and IT), I am well verged with the predictive modelling techniques like Regression (Linear, Logistic, Multi Linear), Clustering, Forecasting (time-series), Factor, Neural Network, SVM, SOM, Bayeian Networks and MCMC. Also I am proficient with most of the statistical tools used in indusrty like R, SAS, SPSS, Bayesia Lab, AMOS, Minitab and others. But still I find it hard to get a job of my worth as I am a fresher There are jobs in the market, I agree but Not for freshers, Then how to start...?
Karishma, Because of limited bandwidth which Analytics managers have, a lot of them prefer people with work experience. Hence you may feel that there aren't enough jobs for the freshers. If you have knowledge about all the topics you mentioned, I think you just need to illustrate some applications of them. Here are a few things which can provide you with opportunities to do so:
Participate in some of the data competitions and contests. Kaggle is one place where you can find them. There are several others which continue to float around on various Linkedin groups. There are some other competitions which American Express and Mu-Sigma run (only for freshers). Create your profile and start taking some freelancing jobs on Analytics. Elance is a good place to start this. Not only it gives you exposure on industry problems, but provides some extra earnings :) Take up internships in companies. With all this knowledge, there will be a lot of opportunities. Again, check out internshala for these kind of opportunities.
Hopefully, your view will change in a few months. Thanks, KunalIs doing MBA in analytics a good option ?
Ankur, It depends on your past experience, the institute you plan to do MBA from and what you want to achieve afterwards. If you can provide these details and be more specific with queries, I can tell you my view. Thanks, Kunal
Hello Sir, Currently I'm pursuing my MBA from NMIMS. I have work experience of 25 months in TCS in telecom domain. I'm looking forward to be at decision making position . I'm looking for analytics as an option because i like to work with numbers and want to make numbers talk. I want to know about growth opportunities and moreover how should I pave my path for this. Regards, Ankur
Kunal, Thanks a ton for your support. I have found answers to many of my queries through the forum. Could you please pass on your thoughts on CPEE course from INSOFE ? CPEE As I am a resident of Hyderabad, would like to choose either CBA from ISB or CPEE from INSOFE. what do you suggest. Thanks again for your insight. Thanks, Ravi
Ravi, ISB is far bigger recognized brand and typically receives better candidates. I would recommend that over INSOFE. Thanks, Kunal
Hi, I have a BA degree in statistics and I'm currently pursuing an MA degree in finance(final year). My masters course contains a lot of quantitative methods which are also used in analytics and I am picking up the rest on my own. My problem is that there is no placement cell in my college. I am planning to give the amcat and elitmus employability tests. Is there any scope for jobs in analytics for freshers of my qualifications through these tests? Are there any other ways by which I can approach companies for an interview? Thank You for the posts. They are very helpful.
JD, I haven't heard many Organizations referring to scores of these tests for taking freshers in Analytics roles. Typically fresher hiring happens through campus placements. You can check job portals in case there are some opportunities you might find useful. Other alternative can be to take up a role in MIS / BI unit of Organizations, which would be open to your profile (and scores of the tests you mentioned) and then over time shift to more advanced analytics positions. Thanks, Kunal
Thanks Kunal for your insights. My experience has been on Managing Client Relationship and sales side. I am planning to get part time certification/Diploma from a reputed institute so as not to disrupt my existing employment. Could you please suggest some in Gurgaon/ New Delhi
HI Kunal, I do have a experience of more than 8 years in LotusNotes development.Working in Leading MNC.But I want to do executive mba now but When I searched in the net I came across about the Business Analytics courses in some institutes.I am in dilemma which one i need to purse .Please suggest me as Lotus has become Legacy system and openings are diminishing.I am resident of chennai.I am thinking to join in Great Lakes. Please suggest me.
Jenani, The 2 options you are considering are very different in nature. The selection depends on what are your plans / what you want to do in your career. An Exec MBA will lead you to Consultant / strategy roles. Business Analytics course, on the other hand will lead you to a narrower profile in a fastly growing field. My suggestion would be select basis your passion and interest. If you decide for Analytics course, Great Lakes has a good offering. Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal, I am currently working as research analyst in a kpo in delhi. The nature of job is qualitative in nature. I want to go for analytics. I am an MBA and computer science graduate.while searching for business analytics courses I came across an institute in Gurgaon, analytixllab (analytixlabs.co.in). Is it a good institute to do a course in business analytics. Please guide. Regards, Sidhraj
Sidhraj, The profile of their faculty looks good. I don't have any feedback on their course at this stage. I'll let you know as soon as I get more details on them. Let me know if you get more information about them. Regards, Kunal
Hi Kuntal, Thanks for all these insightful information. I am equity analyst (finance background) and have 10+ years experience. I dont have any background in IT. I have background in chemical technology (BE) and MBA finance. After all these years and entirely different background; how easy/difficult is to pursue fresh career in these areas - Analytics and Big data. Will there be opportunities for such diverse background on immediate and Long term basis. Also, I am decently paid and well settled career but i find these areas interesting. Should these areas offer so better opportunities that; i should think about changing career in late 30s. If i want to; How should i proceed - full time/part time. Which universities/courses should i look for? is there any international universities offer online courses? I heard about NIIT courses; how different they are compared to fulltime from IIM/IIT/ISB courses? Appreciate your suggestion on this. Regards, Raj
Dear Kunal, i really appreciate your patience giving such thoughtful answers. As everyone, i have a career issue to discuss. I am a banking professional(4 yrs experience in retail banking). i am an IT graduate. i am no MBA.I am thinking to switch my career from banking to SAP or SAS.i havent decided which one would it be. So, if i learn SAS ofline and get certification,, will it be helpful ;considering my banking experience or will i be a fresher? if i have to choose a career in SAP or SAS which do you think is best for me?? Sam
Sampath, You can read this article for more details. You will be considered equal to some one with around 1 year of experience as you understand the domain. You will benefit more with SAS, if you want to go into advanced analytics (predictive modeling, clustering, segmentation). If you are more interested in Dashboard based analysis, you can consider SAP. Thanks, Kunal
Dear Kunal Thanks a lot for sharing your views and knowledge. If possible can you tell me programming language and courses i should study for a successful career in data analytics?? PS: I am learning R and have a finance background. I feel not knowing coding at all is my biggest drawback. But reading your article and also interacting with few prof has given me the confidence that i still have a chance. Thanks Manjiri
Manjiri, You can read this article. If programming is a concern, you should start from SAS. Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal, This is truly an interesting article. Thank you! I am an engineer, MBA and have over 5 years of experience in Business Research and Strategy consulting. I was thinking of expanding my skill sets, and Analytics seemed to me as the next logical step. Do you think my profile fits in? Also does a certification in say ISB help me find jobs in Analytics field, keeping in mind I already have 5 years experience in Business research?
Sreeja, ISB course definitely looks like the obvious choice for you. Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal, First of all Thanks for sharing your views, It is a very well written article and very helpful. Kunal, I have a 1 year experience with one of the leading IT-giant. I wish to change my domain to analytics. Will it be right of me to switch at this time or should i stay in for 1 more year and then switch? Also with no experience in the field of analytics, how can i get into this field? The institutes providing 3-4 months analytics training; are they the right place to get the basics? It would be very kind of you if you can answer all my queries and clear all my doubts. :) Thanks and Regards Bhav
Bhav, What would an additional year of experience provide you, if you want to switch to analytics any ways. I would say switch as soon as you get a good opportunity. You can look at the tips written in this article. Regards, Kunal
I am graduate looking for business analytics course which has a duration of 12months/ one year. There are courses with a duration of 9months.. But are they good enough? Will the certification be accepted for job or for further studies?
Shweta, You can check out some comparisons here. We are coming up with a detailed comparison in some time. Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal, Thank you for sharing all the information about analytics. I am a Software Engineer working for an MNC. My primary technology is Oracle PL/SQL. I want to switch in to the analytic domain. But i have a few doubts/queries about the same. I would really appreciate if i can get some advice and guidance from you. 1) Is it okay if i leave my current job and pursue a course in analytics for 6 months or so and then look for job?? 2) Will i be able to get a job in analytics if did take a 6 month break and complete my course?? I am really confused. Please do respond. Thanks in advance.
While the strategy to leave job gives you undivided attention towards learning, it also creates undue pressure in mid - long term. I would suggest that you do a few courses available in certification or MOOCs and see how much you enjoy analytics. If you are convinced about the path, then take a break (If your company preovides some form of sabbatical - that can be a boon) Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal, I completed my Masters in Eco-Stats from University of Mumbai. I have some exposure to R. I am looking out at courses offered from various training institutes and I am confused between these 2: http://www.edvancer.in/course/cbap/ http://www.analytixlabs.co.in/courses/sas-business-analytics/ Could you suggest which one would have a better ROI? Also some alternative website links where I can learn online for free would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Paramita, What were your criteria to shortlist the 2 courses mentioned? Why not Jigsaw or Edureka? Best place to start online learning is through Data Science specialization courses on Coursera. Regards, Kunal
Hello Kunal sir, I have selected for 1 year. Businesss Analytics programme of praxis business school, kolkata.its fee is 3 lakhs .I am a fresher with no work experience.I have done B.tech in CSE from a state level engineering college. Is it worth to join there?please reply sir?
It is a good course to join. It has backing of some giants like ICICI. Regards, Kunal
Hii Kunal, Firstly I'd like to thank u for sharing the insights, which I found really helpful. Now like everyone else I have a career issue to discuss. I am an Engg Grad in Marine Engineering from BITS, and have been sailing on tankers for almost 5 years now. But now due to health issues I had to quit sailing and am now looking to switch over analytics ...and due to my love of Maths...I am currently pursuing Actuarial Sciences(am a student member of IAI). Through my core reading I have come across and understood most of financial and stastical tools imployed in analytics, but due to my past background, I have been unable to find a break through in this field. I would like to know whether getting SAS certification (alone or together with actuarial exams) will aid my cause. I totally understand that I would have to start afresh in analytics , and would like to know your recommendations regarding the path to employ. Best Regards, ATUL
Atul, SAS certifications would definitely help. However, you need to be a certified predctive modeller (and not base SAS certified) in order to get a difference on your CV. Predictive modeling along with actuarial exams is a good combo to go with. Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal Really a great article you wrote there. I have some query regarding the BA course for which I need your insight. I did my graduation from Australia in BBA-Marketing. I did my PGDM (Post Graduation Diploma in Management) from IMT Ghaziabad again in Marketing. My first job was with Walmart India in Merchandising and Buying with lots of data crunching as I have to look after 6000 items on daily basis. Currently I am working with CII(Confederation of Indian Industry) in delhi in the role of marketing executive. I have 2 years of experience in marketing, merchandising etc. Now I want to pursue my career as Business Analysts. Where can i pursue the following as I dont want to spend large amount of money on it. Plus I am based in Delhi, so which is the best institute in delhi to pursue the same or which is the best institute for distance learning? Thanks Ishan
Ishan, Unfortunately Analytics is not something, which can be teached over distance learning. There are some good online programmes, which you can join. If you don't want to spend a lot of money - you can start by doing data science specialization from John Hopkins University offered on Coursera. Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal, I am an MBA specialized in marketing and finance from a tier2/3 B School. I have work experience for about 3 years in analytics(1 year in telecom and 2 in market research and now I am a senior analyst). My problem is I am not an extremely number savy person even though I like and understand numbers I tend to make lots of mistakes while performing analysis. I am good in understanding the business problem and in suggesting which analysis or statistic technology should be performed. But I am not that great in actually performing this analysis. What kind of roles do suggest me to focus on. I really know that analytics is a very fast growing industry, but I have realized that roles like data scientist are not my cup of tea. It will be of great help if you can suggest me about the career direction which I should take as I am a bit confused now
Kiran, It is good that you got the realization and you are completely open about it. If you have assessed your sterngths right, a consultant role might be the best for you. It requires exactly the same skillset as your strength and can take you places! Regards, Kunal
Hi Kunal Thanks for your posts, very informative. I' m very much interested to move to analytics. I need some advice. I'm a SAP Finance consultant with 9 yrs exp with commerce background. I now started learning SAS & statistics. What other courses should i take up to move to analytics. Thanks Raja
Hi, Any anyone attended the Great Lakes interview for the Business analytics Course. If so Please share your thoughts and have you cleared the same Thanks Dinesh Kumar
Hi Kunal, I have done Engineering in Biotechnology. Could you or anyone here please tell me about the scope of Clinical SAS? Also, there is a company in Pune which offers Clinical SAS training through their ClipLab programme. Could you please guide me through the same? Thanks! Prashik
Hi, Does great lake offer placements after Business analytics Course.
Tanvi, Great Lakes does not offer placement support directly. However, there is a bunch of industry interaction and sessions to groom you to make you ready for future placements. You can read more details here. Regards, Kunal
Hey Tanvh I have been selected for pgpba program from Great lakes gurgaon campus. I am a post graduate in marketing. But i am only doing this course because I have interest in this program and not because I can get a job easily though I am already working.
Hi, I have 9 years of experience in IT industry with good health care domain knowledge. I am into QA side (automation).having development knowledge also. .now I am planning to change my carrier to big data analytics . .I have enquired couple of institutes, most of them suggested insofe. Please suggest , is this course worth enough , can I get good opportunities if I join. I am looking at analytics manager role . .will that be possible. .please suggest. .
Hi mruthtunjaya, I think that you should start learning Big data tools (Hadoop, Hive, Pig, MapReduce) in parallel to your current work profile. This can be done by online courses provided by the likes of Jigsaw, Edvancer, Edureka. You can check out some other options as well. Once you have gained some more experience, you can switch into a complete analytics role. Regards, Kunal

Hi Kunal, I am working with Digital Marketing Company since 4 months. The job profile is of Analyst. When I passed out from college I had a belief that Analyst profile means working with data, numbers, R , SaS n stuff. But here I am just maintaining adwords , facebook or bing account and just copy pasting data into excel. There are few insights writing work but very of those work. How to make a switch into Business Analyst job which involves big data and programming and analysis things. I had completed my engineering B.E. in Biotechnology from BIT Mesra. If you could provide me with some guidance it would be really helpful.

hi, i am guy with maths in my 10+2(M.P.C) b.com in graduation MBA finance and marketing in Post-graduation Can i go for business analytics courese with R tool and tableau
Hi Kunal I have been following your blog for over a year now, as I was keen to change my career into the field of business analytics. After extensive research and peer reviews I applied for the ISB CBA program and got accepted for the same, although the selection proces did not seem to be a very rigorous one. I am from a completely different background. I am a MS in Mechanical Engineering, working in Business development and Program Management in core manufacturing Tier-1 sectors for the last 10 years. I really need your suggestions before, I go ahead and pay for the course. I need to really have an expert advise on the career prospects, considering my non-it or software background, looking for a break in consulting firms like Deloitte, PWC, Frost and Sullivan etc. I thank you for this immensely informative website. https://in.linkedin.com/in/msourav01 Best Regards Sourav Majumder
Hi Sourav, With ur profile u can get to higher management positions by doing MBA.Why do you want to start afresh in Data analytics field ? Besides we cant predict if Data analytics is real or hype
Hello Sir , I am 3.5 years work experienced as a Database Administrator in IT . Since i had been playing with numbers throughout my career , business analytics has always interested me . I have shortlisted SCMHRD Full Time Business Analytics program , since they provide placement assistance as well. Do let me know what are your reviews on SCMHRD's Business Analytic program.
Hey Kunal, I am a Material science Engineer with 5 years of petrochemical experience. I want to change my field now and I have considered few options for that. One of them being Business Analytics, I have a few queries like : 1) Having no background of commerce field but having interest in math, will this career shift be advisable if I did 1 year Masters in Business Analytics from USA? 2) What shall be the job opportunities as I would have no experience of this field after Masters?
Hi Kunal, Thank you for the great insight into Analytics. My Background: I am an IT professional with 4 years of experience. I have great passion for maths and stats although I have not been in touch for quite a long time. I was thinking of trying to get into the PGDBA (PG in Business Analytics) from IIMC+ISI Kolkata+IIT K, a newly introduced 2 years course, which seems to have good potential. But I feel that this would make my experience of no use. Instead i I do MBA, my experience would back me and would be of great use. So, finally my confusion is: 1. What do you feel abou this course jointly offered by IIMC+ISI Kolkata+IIT K ? 2. Should I go for this course or an MBA? Which would be better for me (Considering I would be happy to do either of the 2)? Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Hi, I have done MSc in statistics from Mumbai university and have worked in Analytics domain for the past 4yrs. Now I am looking to do some course that would enhance my career. I have looked at programs like BABI course from great lakes. Will a course like this enhance my career? Since it is primarily for non-analytics people who want to make a career in analytics. Hi Kunal, I have completed my B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering this year only. I want to get into business analytics. Is it worth pursuing one year full time PGP in BA from Aegis school of business or Immarticus Learning? Being a fresher will I get job opportunities? Your suggestion will be highly appreciated. Thank You.
Hi Kunal, I have learnt R and Python but when we go for any internship, The questions asked in internships/interviews were mostly about programming in Python. I have 12 + years of experience in Functional Testing but I am not a programmer. Need your advice in this regard to gain confidence.
Sir I am computer science engineering final year student. I have already worked with R and tableau and attended various workshops conducted in my university. I also have a 2 months training in Big Data as my summer internship. Presently I am looking forward to cracking PGDBA(joint program by IIM Cal, IIT K and ISI Cal) which has its entrance test in mid February. After the written test they conduct a personal interview round. The thing is that, out of the total number of students selected, only 10-15% of candidates selected are freshers. So what would your suggestions be? As far as work experience, that is zero for me as i will be graduating in 2018 May. Shall I take up python or another analytics language or what extra can I do if I get shortlisted for the PI round ? Thank you
