Review – Post Graduate Program in Business Analytics from Great Lakes Institute of Management

Kunal Jain 17 Apr, 2015 • 6 min read

Recently, I spent half a day speaking about Insurance Analytics at Great Lakes Institute of Management on their Gurgaon campus. Interacting with students / working professionals wanting to create a career in Analytics has always fascinated me, and so did the interaction with this group.

Since I get a lot of queries on this course, I deliberately spent some extra time after the lecture and met the directors of the program to write a complete review for the help of our audience. So, here is the detailed review about this program. I hope this will help all those who are deciding which program works best for them.

Great Lakes Chennai

Positioning of the course:

Post Graduate Program in Business Analytics from Great Lakes Institute of Management aims to create business professionals who can use and understand analytics to make data based decisions. In a nutshell, the learning outcome as established by the faculty and curriculum, is the ability to look at unstructured data problems, solve them using appropriate analytical techniques and tools and link them to business actionable and tangibles.

Audience of the class:

The typical audience of the course has 3-12 years of work experience, with average work experience of little over 9 years. About 20% of the class has experience more than 10 years highest being 25 years. The class has a fair mix of people from various backgrounds – IT, Management Consulting, Entrepreneurs etc.

Structure of the program:

The program is run in a different manner in both the locations – Gurgaon and Chennai. Gurgaon offers it as a weekend program and caters to mostly people from Delhi NCR. Chennai, on the other hand, runs a 5 day residency program every alternate month – which allows it to cater to the people outside Chennai (e.g. Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and other cities).

All the lectures get recorded, so that the students who are not able to attend the classes have an option to watch them later.

Coming to the program, the program teaches you various concepts a manager needs in their roles for the first 4 months – Customer Relationship Management, Finance, Marketing, etc. Post this phase, the course starts introducing statistical concepts and business analytics concepts and inculcates structured thinking through several assignments and exercises.

Most of the participants I talked to mentioned that the workload is significant, especially because they already have work commitments outside of this course. When I discussed this with the faculty, they said that the program is designed to be rigorous.

Faculty:

I was impressed by the wealth of experience and knowledge course Directors possessed. Prof. Mukhopadyay completed his Ph.D. from ISI and has been associated with top of the line B-schools (IIM Calcutta, MDI, SP Jain) and has worked with Government policies.

Prof. Viswanathan completed his MBA from FMS, MS from Manitoba, Canada and Ph.D. from Madras University. He has co-authored 3 books on Business Statistics and Market Research. Both the directors were brimming with knowledge about analytics, have worked hands-on on several statistical tools like R and SAS themselves. I enjoyed my discussions with both of them and I hope to meet Prof. Viswanathan face to face some time soon.

Great Lakes Chennai

Industry interaction and the Capstone project:

One of the things, I was impressed was that during the course, participants spend 40% of their time interacting with the people from Analytics Industry. Experts from industry are not only involved as guest faculty, but they also teach courses in the Industry Application module, which happens in the last 3 months of the program. Industry experts from leading analytics companies train the candidates in Marketing analytics, Retail analytics, Insurance analytics, Financial analytics and Web & Social media analytics. In addition to teaching, they also play an active role in setting up the course, designing the curriculum, evaluating the examinations and finally mentoring the students with Capstone project.

During the capstone project, the participants are mentored by industry experts and Great Lakes faculty. While some candidates pursue the project with their existing employers, for others the projects are provided by Great Lakes

Online content partner:

One of the distinguishing factors for this course is the partnership with Jigsaw Academy and that comes across when you talk to the participants. The association adds value and complements the business focussed lectures with technical content.

Suitability / Fit of the program:

Since most of the questions, I receive are around the fit of analytics programs with career of people, I thought I should include a brief note on this:

  • Profile 1 – People from premier / Tier I education institutes (Quant background): People from this background can use this course for making a switch into analytics and analytics consultancies. If you are from this background and want to become a hands on data-scientist or an analyst, be prepared to take a few more self-learning courses apart from what Great Lakes has to offer. You should use Great Lakes to get exposure to live problems and interaction with industry people.
  • Profile 2 – People with 5 – 10 years of experience from BI / Consulting / IT / Software domains: I think this is the best fit group for this course. These people can make the transition into the analytics parallels in their Organizations during / after the course. Again, you should plan for a steady transition – for example, if your experience has been in Sales of software solutions – it makes sense to transition into Sales of analytics solutions and then move into business roles or consultancy roles.

I was in a strategy consulting role before joining this Program at Great Lakes and wanted to add ability to include analytics offerings to my clients so that I can offer them a holistic solution. This course from Great Lakes has enabled me to make this shift and I can now provide better solutions to my clients.

-Yash Rai, Manager, The Smart Cube

  • Profile 3 – People with 10+ years of experience from any domain: This group should consider this course as a skill augmentation course rather than a path to break into analytics career. A couple of entrepreneurs / Senior management I talked to (who belonged to this profile) were very satisfied with the course and the way it was helping them in achieving their goals.

I have been selling IT solutions to various clients for 15 years now. We want to include analytics in our product and in order to do so, I had to develop a deeper understanding of various analytical techniques. Great Lakes has fulfilled its promise to enrich me with this knowledge and we are now including analytics in our product offering.

– Ashok Kolliakal, Entrepreneur with 15+ years of experience

If you are of some other profile, use the guidelines above to find how this course would fit with you. If you still need guidance, feel free to drop your queries through comments below.

Overall Verdict:

I enjoyed my day interacting with the students, faculty and Directors of the program. The zeal to create one of the best analytics program for working professionals in India comes across in the entire team. What I liked was the clarity and alignment of vision in the Great lakes team, the arrangements to provide access to material outside the class and the intensive industry interaction.

The focus of the course is to enable its participants with structured thinking and tools to help them make data driven decisions in their day to day business roles and challenges. I can happily recommend the course to the profiles mentioned above.

What this course is not?

This course is not meant to make you a technical person in analytics industry or a statistician. The aim of the program is to inculcate structured thinking in its participants provide analytics as a tool set in their repository. It does not aim to make you an analyst who applies cutting edge algorithms himself, but equips you to understand which algorithm should be applied to which business situation.

The program (like other programs currently offered by various institutes in India), does not offer placements. However, the program does provide career enhancement support in terms of resume workshops, interview preparation and access to opportunities. In my discussions with the Prof Bappaditya, he mentioned about how there are examples of candidates have transitioned into analytics roles within their existing organizations or move into new organizations

End Notes:

If you have any additional queries about the program, please feel free to reach out to me and I’ll either answer your queries or put you in touch with the right people who know the answer.

Disclosure: As part of this association with the Great Lakes Institute of Management, I have been paid as a Guest Faculty. This has had no bearing to the review published above. Hi Kunal, I'm big fan of your articles. Thanks for your guidance and sharing knowledge. Based on my current experience, I have shortlisted for PGP-BA program in Great Lakes, Chennai. I have three questions, 1.) Is the certificate provided by Great Lakes Management is of Industry Standards(i.e, Apart from our skills , will the companies consider this certification as a shortlisting criteria for both interview and selection offer)?? 2.) Will this company help us to find analytic roles in offline mode(i.e, guidance after course completion) 3.) I have 2.8 years of experience in leading IT firm, and I just want to know under which profile I fall into(from the above three profile you mentioned)??? Thanks in Advance!!!!

Hi All, need you opinions and advice. I have been selected for the Business Analytics program at Great Lakes, and am unable to decide if I should consider it, or wait and try for the ISB program. I have close to 4 years experience in MIS Reporting, and recently moved to analytics in a new organization, where I am working on analysis using Tableau and learning on the job, as I have no prior analytics experience. GL or ISB, which would be a better fit for me, your thoughts please? Your responses would greatly influence my decision, as I have to confirm to GL before the day after tomorrow!

Dear Kunal, First of all, let me appreciate your effort in tirelessly replying the questions/inquiries people have been asking from last 5-6 months. What an effort! Now, to introduce myself, I am working in an MNC as business analyst. I have over all work experience of 6 years of which 3 years were in work force management/capacity planning which involved a lot of strategical decision making and 1.5 years in MIS, report building etc. Remaining year were in different set of fields. Currently, I have been working on applications like SAP Business Object, MS Excel, VB (Learning) for building reports and I wish to accelerate my carrier into the field of business analytics as I love this field and have lot of interest in doing analysis. I am not sure, whether I should wait a little and gain more experience in my current role or should I jump in to enroll myself into GL BA program? I don't want to reach to a point where the knowledge sharing becomes an alien stuff to me in the program. :) I hope you have understood where am I coming from? and I would really appreciate if you can advise me on the same. Sincerely, Ashish

Hi Kunal, Am an ardent follower of your posts. They are both enlightening and informative. I have 15 yrs workexp in BFSI, spanning roles in sales, product mgmt, distribution. More recently I have taken over a new role of leading the BI, Analytics teams. Since I am strong on the domain front, I wanted to familiarise myself better on the approach to various tools, techniques for solving biz problems. With this thought, I set out to assess the long term courses being offered on Analytics programs. Request your guidance on the certification programs namely GL Gurgaon, IIM B. Also any suggestions on how to overcome the 'mindset block' on aversion to coding/programming..

I will also take this opportunity and bug you a little more. I have about 10 yeas experience in Actuarial Industry(Not a full Actuay) but couldn't get an Interesting profile so far and thought of upgrading myself so that i can utilise Analytics /Stats/Tool to apply for Insurance analytics or may be some other industry. Concern in my mind is whether it is worth investing time, Money and at the end not able to service liabilities (Read Home Loans, Livelihood) from the job that i expect to get after the course. I mean, I understand things cant change so much in a year and help me earn about 20 lakhs to be in same position with this recently acquired skill. However, I am still really interested to do this course may be on my own ( Sounds unrealistic), Do you think , it is possible to get some guidance from kind fellows like you and do self study, Which mean not taking too much risk of financial failure (read -not able to win at least current compensation to service financial liabilities after new job from acquired skill set) It will be really great if you can suggest / refer material that one can use to acquire mentioned syllabus of this course. I understand, I am being too demanding with such requests but thought of trying and see what you have to say.......Thanks A Lot once again for putting so much attention / focus for this social cause...Looking forward to hear from you.....Sam

Hi Kunal! I have been following lots of articles regarding Analytics on this website recently and found them extremely helpful in taking decision of entering the Analytical field or chosing the best institute. I myself is in a big dilemma whether to go for this change(Analytics career) after devoting my 13 yrs in Sales & Marketing as a Corporate support team member. I have inclination towards analytics and have zeroed on IIM-L's CPBAE as the best suited for me but still apprehensive about the opportunities I will have post that. I am from a non technical background and am currently working as a Business Analyst with a telecom company. I am earning pretty well (17L+) and want to know my earning capabilities post this program. Seek your guidance. Thanks.

Hi Kunal, I congratulate you on your effort in this forum. The scenario with me is completely different from other folks out here. Iam a commerce graduate with 6 years experience in financial BPOs'. I had to resign from my career and take up my family-led-business under certain critical circumstances. I have a gap in my professional career for 7 years now. I can say that Iam starting my career all over again. Hence, I believe that it also gives me a leverage to choose a field I want to pursue my career in. Now based on the said situation, I would like to seek your opinion on few aspects: 1) Is career in analytics an option for me ? ( I do understand that Iam a novice and the amount of effort and dedication that is required to seek the skills. Since, I have time at my disposal I think I can do justice to what I take up) 2) Is there any age criteria that the industry prefers to offer a job in this field? 3) If your answer is a 'YES' to my 1st question, then should it be GL or should I look at certification programs from JIGSAW academy at Bangalore? 4) If yes, then what's the entry pay package that I can expect? I would sincerely appreciate your time and effort, if you could clarify these question of mine. Thank u! Thiru.,

Hi Kunal, Sorry but the review you shared above is way too generic. For a professional who is willing to invest 3-4 lakh on a course would want nitty-gritty and exact course content broken down. Which the above review does not provide- though it's just my opinion. The same would be available on the website of the Colleges/Institutions but was looking forward to read the same in your article. Its so repulsive to see so many institutions offering courses on Analytics & Statistics though hardly i have come across any which share real world case studies and ask the apprentice to build algorithm and draw meaningful instances from the business case. I know one of my known Sr. Manager who is currently undergoing ISB Analytics course and that is also very generic course with some basic know how on regression and some of the Analytical tools. As a business lead and an expert i believe i need to have end to end expertise of solution i am accommodating for the clientele and if even after spending 0.4 million i am unsure of the same then its worthless. I hope you agree with me and in case there are some institutions in India which offer in depth Analytical learning please advice. Thanks, Shivi

Hi Kunal, I am into IT (Testing Automation) with around 6 years of experience and a good salary package. I would like to know 1) how this course would help me in transition to a career in Business Analytics. 2) What would be the roles on offer and would I be considered a fresher, since most of the roles I saw on job portals required around 2-3 years of experience in the analytics domain. 3) What are the salaries on offer considering I already have a very good salary package. 4) Would this course alone help me make a transition as a Data Scientist considering I don't have experience in this domain.

Hi Kunal, I m interested for this course and am also selected for this weekend course. I am having 3.8 years of experience in Retail analytics, And i am Base and Advance SAS Certified. I liked the course contents, but they are providing very few classes in one year. So how is possible to cover all tools like SAS,R,Tablue and other concepts? Because i have done one course ,and the fees is very huge. So is it right choice to go with this program. Thanks, Chirag

Hi, I have 6.5 years of experience in IT (Build, deployments, Application Support, Environment Management and Release Management | DevOps) . I am planning to transition into analytics. I came across GL-PGP BABI and MISB EPBA program. Please can you help me out which one would be a suitable course for me as till now I have been involved on technology side (mainly, setup and configuration of software/tools) I don't have a strong domain knowledge as of now. My expectation from the program is to have end to end Analytics knowledge in order to be job ready on completion of the program. Regards Rohan Shetty
