DataHour: Natural Language Processing for Indian Languages

About the Event

Natural language processing (NLP) is the ability of a computer system to understand the human language in spoken or written form. This branch of artificial intelligence is utilized in building systems (like chatbots, voice assistants) which interact with humans in a similar way that human beings can do. Also, there are also various other use cases in business, industry and research where NLP is being used significantly.

It is known that around 10% of the Indian population speak English, and the rest 90% speak regional languages like Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi etc. So, to make AI systems better for regional languages, there is a need to bolster NLP research for Indian languages. In this DataHour, Karan will cover the following topics:

  • Challenges in NLP for Indian languages.
  • Text preprocessing toolkits for Indian languages.
  • Pre-trained word embeddings and language models for Indian languages.
