A wide variety of menu driven software packages can be employed to perform all sorts of sophisticated analyses. There is one problem, though. No package is “intelligent” enough to suggest the “optimal” techniques to apply on a dataset in order to make the most sense of it. Indeed, there may not be any! The specific purpose of the analysis drives the selection of such techniques. Anyone assuming the role of a “data analyst” must possess a sound knowledge of statistics. College curricula typically prepare students to use tools such as spreadsheets, and may prepare them to illustrate their data with scatter plots, pie charts, histograms, time series and so on. Although visually appealing, this approach has little utility. Making decisions involves more than just data visualization.
This two-week hands-on program is focused on the four key aspects of any statistical activity: data collection, analysis, interpretation & presentation.
