DeepMind and Linkedin Co-founders Launch ChatGPT Competitor ‘Pi’

Google DeepMind and LinkedIn have come together to launch an artificial intelligence chatbot called Pi. The AI developed by Inflection AI aims to compete with the likes of OpenAI, Snap, and Google. The debut of ‘Pi’ amidst the rise of investors’ and consumers’ interest in AI technology brings Google back into the game.

Pi: A Sympathetic Sounding Board

Users of Pi can directly communicate with the chatbot through an app or via text, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and other messaging services. The chatbot has the demeanor of a sympathetic sounding board rather than seeking to offer knowledge, according to Inflection AI Chief Executive Mustafa Suleyman. The product has a limited use case, which makes it safer and simpler to control. It has been beta-tested by consumers for a number of months.

Limitations of Pi

Although developed by the co-founders of Deepmind and LinkedIn, Pi does come with some limitations. There are a number of things Pi cannot do, like coding, making marketing plans, or writing essays for school. It is purely designed for relaxed, supportive, and informative conversions, said Suleyman in an interview with Financial Times.

Distinct Features of Pi

In a live demonstration of the chatbot, Pi stood out from competitors like ChatGPT or Bard because it frequently ended its responses with a question for the user, promoting conversation. Suleyman remarked, “That’s what Pi does extremely well—it facilitates your own course of investigation.” However, Suleyman promised that would change. “It does not give citations or sources. Like other massive language models, which form the basis of the new breed of chatbots, it occasionally makes up facts as well,” he continued.

Investment in Inflection AI

Hoffman, one of Microsoft’s board members, is also a partner at the VC firm Greylock, which supported Inflection. The firm had handled a US$250 million investment into the development of the AI. Due to potential conflicts with the AI companies he works with, Hoffman announced his resignation from the OpenAI board in March.

The launch of Pi comes at a time when the market for AI chatbots is becoming highly competitive, with the likes of OpenAI, Google, and Snap already having established themselves in the space. However, with the co-founders of DeepMind and LinkedIn behind it, Pi is sure to stand out in the crowded market.
