Common myths about a career in Business Analytics: Busted!
Some time back, I wrote an article on “How to start a career in Business Analytics?“. The article was well received by people who want to enter Business Analytics. It is still one of the most popular articles on Analytics Vidhya. In response to this article, I received a lot of queries about career in Analytics. While some of them were good queries, some of them were recurring myths.
Hence, I decided to do a follow up article. Not only so, in order to debunk these myths entirely, I decided to publish the articles in all relevant forums.
Here are the myths I received through queries / comments / emails and my take on them:
-
You need to be an engineer to start a career in Business Analytics: The truth is that you don’t. All you need is ability to think structurally and comfort with number crunching. As long as you can put structure to unstructured problems and perform back of the envelope calculations, you are as good as any analyst out there.
Having said that, companies prefer people from quantitative background as they are expected to be better with numbers. By quantitative background, I mean people from any of these disciplines: Engineering, Economics, Maths, Statistics, Physics or MBAs with graduation in these fields.
- Analytics is about working with large datasets / Companies work with big data day in and day out: This rosy picture is far from reality in most of the Organizations. Experts estimate penetration of big data to be in low single digit percentage among Organizations. Most of the time analytics team work on specific problems, which may or may not involve large datasets. The requirement of the role is to be able to put structure across unstructured problems and be able to use numbers to understand business and the changes required in strategy.
- You need to be a programmer: I was a good C++ programmer when I started my career in Analytics. Sadly, none of those skills have been utilized in last 7 years and might not be utilized in future. You only need to learn programming for the tool you use for your analysis (e.g. SAS, R, SQL etc.), but you don’t need to be a good programmer before hand to learn these. Also, most of these tools have a Graphical User Interface (GUI), which you can start using with out knowing programming.
- Learning Analytics is all about learning a tool (SAS / SPSS / other tool): A tool is just a tool to perform Analysis. It can not perform analysis on its own. You need to understand the fundamentals required for performing analysis like:
- What are the things you need to keep in mind while performing Regression?
- What can you infer from the coefficients and outcome of t-tests?
- How do you prove or dis-prove a business hypothesis?
Once you understand these, applying them through any tool can help you start your journey of Analytics.
- Its difficult to find a job – In fact it is the other way around. Analytics industry is struggling with attrition and shortage of talent. According to the McKinsey Global Institute (In a May 2011 report): “By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.” If you have the right skills, you will be highly sought after (at least in the current market conditions).
Are there any other myths that you are aware of? In case you are, or are unsure whether it is a myth or a fact, please add it below.

Useful article Kunal. Needed to know your views on the depth of statistics knowledge a person should know to make good sense of BA ( you may mention bare minimum and desirable ) .....regs/santoshKunal Jain says: August 28, 2013 at 5:45 am
Santosh, I would say that at the very least, you need to understand all the basic terms (mean, median, standard deviation, confidence interval, normal distribution, binalmial distribution) and hypothesis testing (Null hypothesis, alternate hypothesis, t-test etc.). You may need to understand lift curve and a few co-efficients, if you want to make sense of predictive modeling. Hope this helps. Kunal, Do I need a background of finance and current affairs to become a analyst , if not where are those required? Thanks, MruthyunjayKunal Jain says: September 10, 2013 at 7:24 pm
Mruthyunjaya, Background in Finance is not a critical need, but people from Finance background can become analysts due to quant exposure. Current affairs has no relation with becoming an analyst. Hope this answers your question. Thanks, KunalVikesh Bhartee says: October 06, 2013 at 7:00 am
Kunal how is the job scenario for analytics in European countries such as Ireland?? ,/VikeshKunal Jain says: October 15, 2013 at 5:19 pm
Vikesh, Overall, the European markets are still recovering from recession and there have been some signs of recovery. The demand for Analytics is good, but I am not sure it is good enough to plan a move to these countries. If you have some opportunity in hand, then it is a different matter. You can refer to efinancialcareers.com for job postings in Financial space in UK. If there is some other reason for the query, let me know. I'll help in whatever manner I can. Hi Kunal, First thanks for making an effort to provide insights into analytics field. I came across your blog while i was searching for some information around analytics. Actually i am a software programmer with 6 yrs of experience in mainframe technology ,we also use SAS (mainframe compatible) in our org. Of late i have been planning to pursue analytics course(my interest mostly owing to the fact that its going to be a sort after job in coming years PLUS i think there is limited growth in my current field both in terms of remuneration and postion PLUS i think i have good hand in playing with data and logical thinking PLUS i am keen to learn something New apart from what i am currently doing). I donot have any real experience in the field of analytics. Though i have almost made my mind of getting in to some kind of course , but would still like you to provide your view if i am thinking in the right direction and it would be useful to me. I think i should better enrol myself in a program where there is Classroom training as well along with the online training. I have shortlisted following options for analytics course. 1)PG program by Great Lakes(gurgaon) in business analytcs. Pros Since i am working in gurgaon , so it would be easier for me to attend the classes.(they have 5 whole day classes every alternate month (i.e almost 20 days in 11 months), rest of the classes will be online. Fee- 3 lacs I know its Not cheap , but cheaper than my second option (IIM-L which is charging 4.8 lacs for this course) Cons Its their first batch so do Not know how that would be. With their description of modules it seems that they are going to cover more functionl areasi.e their focus would moe be on providing horisontal knowledge covering many domain rather than Vertical knowledge. Tools Covered - SAS , R ,Tableu. 2)- IIM-Lucknow Pros- Good brand name This is Not the first batch(unlike Great lakes) so may be the course is more refined and matured than GL. 80% of classes would be taken by SAS institute itself. Cons- Higher fees - 4.8 lacs Distant location than my work place. Obviously i can share with you the course/curriculum details of Gl may be that would help you make a comparison b/e couse by IIM-l and GL. Please advise if its worth to spent this amounts of this course , i am assuming that regular course will have its own advantages..but may be i am wrong... or can i also look for options (i.e some coaching institute which provide similar training). Since i have to make a descion by 9th november (last date to deposit fees in GL), Could you please guide me through . Thanks a lot in advance.Kunal Jain says: November 01, 2013 at 5:06 pm
Dheeraj, You are right in thinking that you should prefer classes + online training. Between the 2 options you have mentioned, I would have preferred IIM-L due to brand and association with SAS. I would consider the course from ISB to be better than the 2 and they have been running the course for 2 - 3 batches now. There admissions are also open, see if that fits you better. Thanks, Kunaldheeraj says: November 03, 2013 at 5:04 pm
Hi Kunal, Thanks very much for a quick response, i really appreciate that. As suggested by you i had a look at the ISB site and the course details looks very good...It definitely seems to have an edge over others..Highest interaction classroom hours...Very Esteemed faculty....More experience in providing this course...and yes ISB brand too. Now the only thing that bothers me that (god forbid if ) iam not able to get through the selection procedure i will have to wait for another batch i.e delay of 6 months is the difference (in course , brand name , overall benefits) is worth to take this risk. This puts me in dilemma again , Shall i defer the admission call by GL and IIm and apply tor iSb and wait for results and clases to begin till feb Or shall i go ahead with my current option wherein course is beginning from next month onwards.... Thanks Dheeraj..Kunal Jain says: November 04, 2013 at 8:57 pm
I would have applied for ISB. When you are investing so much for the training, why not do it from the best available place. Thanks, KunalSalil says: November 14, 2013 at 10:42 am
Dear Kunal, Interesting and insightful reads. Will you please suggest some reasonably priced /free online /part-time programmes on analytics. Thank you SalilKunal Jain says: November 14, 2013 at 3:44 pm

Thanks Kunal, though I cannot see any article links. Will follow through. Regards. - Dr. Salil Skarishma says: November 29, 2013 at 11:21 am
Hi Kunal, I appreciate your initiative. But I am a bit not justified with the last myth's explanation. I am a PGDM in Decision Sciences (Analytics and IT), I am well verged with the predictive modelling techniques like Regression (Linear, Logistic, Multi Linear), Clustering, Forecasting (time-series), Factor, Neural Network, SVM, SOM, Bayeian Networks and MCMC. Also I am proficient with most of the statistical tools used in indusrty like R, SAS, SPSS, Bayesia Lab, AMOS, Minitab and others. But still I find it hard to get a job of my worth as I am a fresher There are jobs in the market, I agree but Not for freshers, Then how to start...?Kunal Jain says: November 29, 2013 at 8:11 pm
Karishma, Because of limited bandwidth which Analytics managers have, a lot of them prefer people with work experience. Hence you may feel that there aren't enough jobs for the freshers. If you have knowledge about all the topics you mentioned, I think you just need to illustrate some applications of them. Here are a few things which can provide you with opportunities to do so:Participate in some of the data competitions and contests. Kaggle is one place where you can find them. There are several others which continue to float around on various Linkedin groups. There are some other competitions which American Express and Mu-Sigma run (only for freshers). Create your profile and start taking some freelancing jobs on Analytics. Elance is a good place to start this. Not only it gives you exposure on industry problems, but provides some extra earnings :) Take up internships in companies. With all this knowledge, there will be a lot of opportunities. Again, check out internshala for these kind of opportunities.
Hopefully, your view will change in a few months. Thanks, KunalAnkur Bhargava says: December 28, 2013 at 9:15 pm

Hello Sir, Currently I'm pursuing my MBA from NMIMS. I have work experience of 25 months in TCS in telecom domain. I'm looking forward to be at decision making position . I'm looking for analytics as an option because i like to work with numbers and want to make numbers talk. I want to know about growth opportunities and moreover how should I pave my path for this. Kunal, Thanks a ton for your support. I have found answers to many of my queries through the forum. Could you please pass on your thoughts on CPEE course from INSOFE ? CPEE As I am a resident of Hyderabad, would like to choose either CBA from ISB or CPEE from INSOFE. what do you suggest. Thanks again for your insight. Thanks, RaviKunal Jain says: January 09, 2014 at 5:40 pm
Ravi, ISB is far bigger recognized brand and typically receives better candidates. I would recommend that over INSOFE. Thanks, KunalJD says: February 05, 2014 at 4:27 am
Hi, I have a BA degree in statistics and I'm currently pursuing an MA degree in finance(final year). My masters course contains a lot of quantitative methods which are also used in analytics and I am picking up the rest on my own. My problem is that there is no placement cell in my college. I am planning to give the amcat and elitmus employability tests. Is there any scope for jobs in analytics for freshers of my qualifications through these tests? Are there any other ways by which I can approach companies for an interview? Thank You for the posts. They are very helpful.Kunal Jain says: February 08, 2014 at 4:26 pm
JD, I haven't heard many Organizations referring to scores of these tests for taking freshers in Analytics roles. Typically fresher hiring happens through campus placements. You can check job portals in case there are some opportunities you might find useful. Other alternative can be to take up a role in MIS / BI unit of Organizations, which would be open to your profile (and scores of the tests you mentioned) and then over time shift to more advanced analytics positions. Thanks, KunalJD says: February 08, 2014 at 6:48 pm
Kunal, Thank you for the insights. Could you give me a brief overview of the standard knowledge expected of a fresher applying in the MIS/ BI unit of organisations? Also, if I were to apply for internships at different KPOs/ Analytics firms with my current academic qualifications, is there a realistic likelihood that I'll be considered or do I need to add a few more skills/ certifications before applying? JDKunal Jain says: February 15, 2014 at 12:32 am
JD, It is difficult to answer the answer to first question generically. The expectation vary from company to company. A good knowledge about Excel, SQL and databases will definitely be an added advantage. With regards to KPOs, typically they prefer candidates from tier 1 institutes. But there is no strict rule in most of the Organizations I know. Thanks, KunalJD says: February 15, 2014 at 3:29 am
Kunal, Since most organisations do prefer candidates from tier 1 institutes, could you suggest anything that can help my application stand out ? Apart from developing my skills and proficiency in the subject matter, is there anything else that I should be doing to give myself an added edge?AJ says: April 07, 2014 at 10:05 am
Hi Kunal, I just read your article and think you are doing a really great work to remove confusions in Analytics Aspirants mind. I have a few of my own. Appreciate if you could help on these a. I an Engg and MBA (ICFAI- Hyd) by qualification. I took up Banking job after my MBA and have 7 years experience in banking in business loans. Presently I am looking for a career change to IT companies and find analytics as one way for the same. However I dont know which college/institute to take this analytics course from b. What would be the salary package I would be getting c. Whether my current work experience will be counted or will I be considered fresher Hope to get your views on the same.Kunal Jain says: April 08, 2014 at 3:34 am
AJ, Thanks for appreciating our work. Here are my responses: a. While analytics might have reporting to CIOs in some companies and there is close work alongside IT, it is not IT. If you want to join IT companies / industry, why not take up a more relevant course / certification? b. This depends on multiple factors including your experience (kind of roles, skills etc.). Salaries in Analytics industry typically start from 5L - 12L p.a. for a fresher. For a person with 7 years experience, it might be anywhere between 13L - 25L p.a. c. Depends on what exactly was your role. If the role had strategic elements like product design in it, some of it will be considered. On the other hand, if it was a Sales role, it would not be considered. Hope this answers your questions. Regards, KunalAJ says: April 08, 2014 at 11:47 am

Is it a good institute to do a course in business analytics. Please guide. Regards, SidhrajKunal Jain says: May 03, 2014 at 5:15 am
Sidhraj, The profile of their faculty looks good. I don't have any feedback on their course at this stage. I'll let you know as soon as I get more details on them. Let me know if you get more information about them. Regards, KunalKunal Jain says: May 03, 2014 at 5:42 am
Jenani, The 2 options you are considering are very different in nature. The selection depends on what are your plans / what you want to do in your career. An Exec MBA will lead you to Consultant / strategy roles. Business Analytics course, on the other hand will lead you to a narrower profile in a fastly growing field. My suggestion would be select basis your passion and interest. If you decide for Analytics course, Great Lakes has a good offering. Regards, KunalS Raj says: May 04, 2014 at 6:50 am

Will there be opportunities for such diverse background on immediate and Long term basis. Also, I am decently paid and well settled career but i find these areas interesting. Should these areas offer so better opportunities that; i should think about changing career in late 30s. If i want to; How should i proceed - full time/part time. But i have a few doubts/queries about the same. I would really appreciate if i can get some advice and guidance from you. 1) Is it okay if i leave my current job and pursue a course in analytics for 6 months or so and then look for job?? 2) Will i be able to get a job in analytics if did take a 6 month break and complete my course?? While the strategy to leave job gives you undivided attention towards learning, it also creates undue pressure in mid - long term. I would suggest that you do a few courses available in certification or MOOCs and see how much you enjoy analytics. If you are convinced about the path, then take a break (If your company preovides some form of sabbatical - that can be a boon) Regards, KunalParamita says: July 27, 2014 at 1:51 pm

I am looking out at courses offered from various training institutes and I am confused between these 2: http://www.edvancer.in/course/cbap/ http://www.analytixlabs.co.in/courses/sas-business-analytics/ Could you suggest which one would have a better ROI? Also some alternative website links where I can learn online for free would be much appreciated. Thanks.Kunal Jain says: July 28, 2014 at 5:24 am
Paramita, What were your criteria to shortlist the 2 courses mentioned? Why not Jigsaw or Edureka? Best place to start online learning is through Data Science specialization courses on Coursera. Regards, KunalParamita says: July 28, 2014 at 5:45 pm
Hello Kunal, My criteria's were: 1. Investment - Since I'm a student, I cant afford courses that are way too expensive. 2. Exhaustive curriculum - This is one reason why I didnt go for Jigsaw. They have too many small courses. At AnalytixLabs, a single course gives a lot of coverage to many topics but at the same time gives enough hours for each topic as well. So does Edvancer. The only difference - Edvancer provides SAS + R and AnalytixLabs gives SAS + SPSS + Advanced Excel. Problem with Edureka is that it focusses more on machine learning and big data with courses on Hadoop, Python etc. I feel its sort of an advanced level of business analytics. For a starter like me, I'd like to first learn SAS. Please let me know if i'm on the correct track (thinking wise) 3. Placements - They are extremely crucial for me at this point. And from internet reviews and student testimonials, these two have an impressive company network list. I've already completed the course on R programming from Coursera offered by John Hopkins University. Looking forward to your perspective sir. Thanks.Alok says: August 02, 2014 at 12:50 pm

I am an Engg Grad in Marine Engineering from BITS, and have been sailing on tankers for almost 5 years now. But now due to health issues I had to quit sailing and am now looking to switch over analytics ...and due to my love of Maths...I am currently pursuing Actuarial Sciences(am a student member of IAI). Through my core reading I have come across and understood most of financial and stastical tools imployed in analytics, but due to my past background, I have been unable to find a break through in this field. I would like to know whether getting SAS certification (alone or together with actuarial exams) will aid my cause. I totally understand that I would have to start afresh in analytics , and would like to know your recommendations regarding the path to employ. Best Regards, ATULKunal Jain says: August 11, 2014 at 5:51 am
Atul, SAS certifications would definitely help. However, you need to be a certified predctive modeller (and not base SAS certified) in order to get a difference on your CV. Predictive modeling along with actuarial exams is a good combo to go with. Regards, KunalIshan says: August 12, 2014 at 5:11 am
Hi Kunal Really a great article you wrote there. I have some query regarding the BA course for which I need your insight. I did my graduation from Australia in BBA-Marketing. Hi Kunal, I am an MBA specialized in marketing and finance from a tier2/3 B School. I have work experience for about 3 years in analytics(1 year in telecom and 2 in market research and now I am a senior analyst). My problem is I am not an extremely number savy person even though I like and understand numbers I tend to make lots of mistakes while performing analysis. I am good in understanding the business problem and in suggesting which analysis or statistic technology should be performed. But I am not that great in actually performing this analysis. What kind of roles do suggest me to focus on. I really know that analytics is a very fast growing industry, but I have realized that roles like data scientist are not my cup of tea. It will be of great help if you can suggest me about the career direction which I should take as I am a bit confused nowKunal Jain says: August 15, 2014 at 9:39 pm
Kiran, It is good that you got the realization and you are completely open about it. If you have assessed your sterngths right, a consultant role might be the best for you. It requires exactly the same skillset as your strength and can take you places! Regards, KunalKunal Jain says: August 15, 2014 at 9:54 pm
Atul, I would say that you should start from SAS certification - Predictive modeler. This is because that skill is the most highly sought after. Regards, KunalKunal Jain says: August 15, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Ishan, Unfortunately Analytics is not something, which can be teached over distance learning. There are some good online programmes, which you can join. If you don't want to spend a lot of money - you can start by doing data science specialization from John Hopkins University offered on Coursera. Regards, KunalKiran says: August 16, 2014 at 3:06 am

Hi mruthtunjaya, I think that you should start learning Big data tools (Hadoop, Hive, Pig, MapReduce) in parallel to your current work profile. This can be done by online courses provided by the likes of Jigsaw, Edvancer, Edureka. You can check out some other options as well. Once you have gained some more experience, you can switch into a complete analytics role. Regards, KunalBhanu says: April 04, 2015 at 3:15 pm

How to make a switch into Business Analyst job which involves big data and programming and analysis things. I had completed my engineering B.E. in Biotechnology from BIT Mesra. Hi Kunal I have been following your blog for over a year now, as I was keen to change my career into the field of business analytics. After extensive research and peer reviews I applied for the ISB CBA program and got accepted for the same, although the selection proces did not seem to be a very rigorous one. I am from a completely different background. I am a MS in Mechanical Engineering, working in Business development and Program Management in core manufacturing Tier-1 sectors for the last 10 years. I really need your suggestions before, I go ahead and pay for the course. I need to really have an expert advise on the career prospects, considering my non-it or software background, looking for a break in consulting firms like Deloitte, PWC, Frost and Sullivan etc. I thank you for this immensely informative website. https://in.linkedin.com/in/msourav01 Best Regards Sourav Majumderajay says: January 23, 2016 at 8:01 am
