About this Course
- This course explains why most enterprise AI pilots never reach production and introduces the Forward Deployed Engineer, the role built to close that gap.
- Follow one stalled AI project from backlog to go-live and see where AI deployment breaks down, even when the model works perfectly in testing.
- Learn what a Forward Deployed Engineer does, the skills the role demands, and how the FDE works differently from data scientists, architects and consultants.
- Apply the FDE mindset and a simple three-phase framework to assess your own AI initiatives and choose the right path to production.
Course Benefits
- Understand why enterprise AI pilots stall before production and how to recognise the deployment gap inside your own organisation.
- Learn exactly what a Forward Deployed Engineer does and the skills that make the role effective in real business environments.
- Gain a clear view of how FDEs differ from data scientists, solutions architects and consultants, and why accountability matters.
- See a complete FDE engagement from discovery to go-live, including human-in-the-loop design and responsible AI deployment.
- Get a practical framework to assess your AI portfolio and decide whether to hire, buy or partner for FDE capability.

A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, is an engineer who works directly inside the real business environment where an AI solution needs to run. They write and own production code, work across technical and business teams, and stay accountable until the system runs in production and delivers the result the business needs.
Most AI pilots do not fail because the model is weak. They stall because the real business environment is far more complex than the test environment, with data spread across disconnected systems, legacy platforms, compliance reviews and teams with competing priorities. The work of closing that gap often falls between roles, so nobody owns it.
The last mile refers to the gap between an AI system that works in a controlled test environment and a system that runs reliably inside a live business. It covers data integration, legacy infrastructure, security, compliance and adoption. This is where much of the value of enterprise AI gets lost, and it is the core problem the FDE role exists to solve.
The role began at Palantir in the early 2010s. Palantir's customers worked inside secure, classified environments and could not share requirements openly, so the company embedded its engineers directly at customer sites. The name comes from military language, where being forward deployed means working close to the operation rather than far away at headquarters.
An FDE needs a T-shaped profile. On the technical side, they need strong software engineering skills and applied AI knowledge to build systems on top of real data and legacy infrastructure. On the human side, they need the communication, judgment and ownership to work across engineering, legal, compliance, operations and business leadership at the same time.
A data scientist owns the model and its performance in testing, a solutions architect owns the technical design, and a consultant owns the recommendations. Each role does valuable work, but none of them is accountable for whether the system runs in production. The FDE owns that outcome and stays with the problem until the system works in the real business.
